POSITION SUMMARY:
The Legal Specialist will be responsible for reviewing motions and petitions filed as habeas corpus or miscellaneous criminal matters at the direction of a staff attorney and also assisting attorneys with research on an ad hoc basis. This includes performing tasks such as reviewing petitions, motions, and responses; researching trial court records and appellate court records as needed; researching court statutes and rules as needed; and analyzing information and preparing written summaries for attorney review. This position will also assist with maintaining the Court’s public rules website, ensuring that Court actions are posted timely, and that rule change petitions and comments are processed and posted. Also, the position includes reviewing and posting case summaries and other information to Court’s website, as well as administering the law student extern program, including scheduling, orientation, and training.

In addition, this position will manage case flow, maintain excel lists and create statistical reports for the office, and interact with personnel from the Supreme Court Clerk’s Office and the judicial suites on scheduling and distribution of Court agendas, case status, and other related information. Also, the position works on maintaining the Court law library and staffing the Advisory Committee on the Rules of Evidence.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid-telework schedule once the employee has completed one year of employment and has sufficiently proved their ability to perform assigned tasks. Any hybrid-telework schedule is at the sole discretion of the Court and subject to change.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires a paralegal certificate from an accredited college or university or an associate degree and a minimum of two years’ experience as a legal specialist or paralegal or similar experience pertinent to criminal law and research. It also requires excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; superior oral and written communication skills; the ability to perform extensive and complex factual and legal research; and to interact diplomatically with coworkers and others in person, by email, and by telephone. Other requirements include the discretion to maintain confidentiality, and the ability to prioritize work, to self-start, and to work independently, with minimal supervision. The position requires knowledge of computer software including MS Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook; PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Westlaw, iCIS.
